    Glorious! Lovely P4C discussion.

Historical point – did all pirates have a Norfolk accent and audition for peasant roles in The Archers?

Thanks. It seems it’s down to Robert Newton, who played Long John Silver in a classic film of Treasure Island, who had a West Country accent. Which makes it an interesting example of “path dependency” – where an initial, fairly arbitrary choice sets a path for future choice, in this case because to sound like a pirate, actors sounded like Robert Newton! In another possible world, Robert Newton was born in Yorkshire and pirates the world over “hoist ‘t mainsail”!
